Compare The Volvo XC90 SUV

Side-by-Side Details of the Volvo XC90 and Top Competitors

Volvo SUVs deliver a multitude of personalities and uses to Pennsylvania drivers. Whether you want a small SUV, a five-passenger SUV, a hybrid SUV, or a three-row family SUV, Volvo has something that works for you. Best of all, we have it available for you at Ken Pollock Volvo Cars. With three rows and two seating configurations, the Volvo XC90 we have in stock is the perfect solution to many drivers' needs. But it also faces stiff competition from other brand names. If you're torn between our XC90 and a similarly sized vehicle from another carmaker, read on. We've done our homework, and we've come up with a number of ways in which our SUV tops the competition.

Volvo XC90 vs. BMW X5

  • Space and seating. The Volvo XC90 comes standard with three rows of seating, for either 6 or 7 people. The BMW X5, on the other hand, comes standard with just two rows and seating for five. A third row is available as an option for the BMW, but it will cut into your interior space, especially when it comes to cargo.
  • Cargo storage. Even without adding the optional third row to the BMW, the Volvo XC90 has more storage space in the rear. The BMW X5 has 33.9 cubic feet standard, which shrinks with the addition of the third row. The Volvo has more than 41 cubic feet available.
  • Efficiency. The Volvo XC90 gets a better EPA fuel economy rating than the BMW X5, too. While the BMW holds more gas with a 21.9-gallon tank, compared to the 18.8-gallon tank in the Volvo, it does poorer at efficiency. The Volvo base model gets 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. Meanwhile, the BMW gets 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
  • Hybrid innovation. The Volvo XC90 has a range of personalities, including a plug-in hybrid model. The BMW X5 also has a variety of trims and engines, but it's lacking the cutting-edge engineering and innovation of the Volvo hybrid system.

Volvo XC90 vs. Audi Q7

  • Storage. Whether it's groceries or golf clubs, soccer gear or suitcases, when you have a lot of gear to take with you, the Volvo XC90 is the more spacious option. Cargo space for the XC90 measures 41.8 cubic feet, compared to just 14.8 cubic feet of available space in the Audi Q7.
  • Hybrid power. Both the Volvo XC90 and the Audi Q7 offer drivers a choice of two great gas-powered engines. However, the Volvo has a third option, its innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain, while the Audi SUV doesn't offer hybrid power.
  • Passenger space. With similar measurements for front and backseat passengers, both SUVs deliver comfort, space, and legroom. But when you move into the third row, the Audi Q7 is decidedly cramped. It's a tight squeeze in the Q7 third row, best suited for small children. But full-grown adults could easily sit in comfort in the third row of the XC90.
  • Safety. Every Volvo XC90 model has standard safety features that drivers love, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, and blind-spot monitoring. Every one of these features will cost you more on the Audi Q7, where they're listed as optional rather than standard.

Volvo XC90 vs. Acura MDX

  • Power and options. With its three impressive powertrains, the Volvo XC90 delivers more power, and more choices for that power, than the Acura MDX. In fact, the XC90 has three exciting engines available, including its range-topping 400-horsepower plug-in hybrid. The Acura MDX, on the other hand, has just one gas-powered engine in its lineup. There is a hybrid option for the Acura, but it's less powerful, at only 321 horsepower, and it doesn't have plug-in capability.
  • Standard safety features. The XC90 also delivers more safety features standard across the lineup than the MDX. Standard amenities for the Volvo include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, oncoming traffic mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. The Acura, on the other hand, has some advanced driver's aids standard, but many, such as blind-spot monitoring, are only available as options.
  • Cargo space. There's no competition between these two SUVs when it comes to toting along your important gear. The Volvo XC90 has a cargo hold that can accommodate up to 41.8 cubic feet, while the Acura tops out only at around 15 cubic feet.
  • Efficiency. Who doesn't like to go further on a tank of gas? The Volvo will take you further than the Acura MDX. A lot further. In fact, looking at just the base model Volvo with the entry level engine, the Volvo delivers a combined 25 mpg rating, while the MDX delivers a combined 23 mpg. Also, the Volvo can go 395 miles in the city and 564 miles on the highway per fill up, while the Acura gets 390 miles in the city and 527 miles on the highway per tank of gas.
